BBC Extend is a program designed to create exciting job opportunities for people who are deaf, disabled, or neurodivergent.
While anyone can apply for BBC jobs, the Extend program reserves certain roles specifically for disabled people, as defined by the Equality Act (2010). It’s our way of making sure everyone has a fair shot and that disabled individuals are better represented in our workforce.
We’re committed to building a workplace where everyone feels included and valued, and BBC Extend is just one of the ways we’re making that happen.
If you’re covered by the Equality Act (2010) definition of disability, you’re eligible to apply for BBC Extend roles. This includes anyone with a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term impact on daily activities. The definition covers visible and non-visible conditions, including medical conditions like Cancer, HIV, or Multiple Sclerosis, as well as individuals who identify as neurodivergent or deaf and hard of hearing.
Do I Need to Disclose My Disability?
Yes, we ask you to confirm that you identify as disabled during the application process so we can ensure BBC Extend roles are only considered by eligible candidates. However, you don’t need to share details about your specific condition or impairment. There’s also an optional section in the application to let us know about any adjustments you might need during the application, interview, or while in the role.
Do I Have to Be in an Office Every Day?
Not necessarily! While some roles, particularly in production or content creation, might require time on-site, the BBC embraces flexible working. Many roles offer the option of working from home, and with BBC bases located across the UK, you don’t have to be tied to one office. Some travel may occasionally be required, depending on the role.
What Kind of Roles Are Available?
BBC Extend offers a variety of opportunities across different levels and departments. From scheduling assistants to senior journalists, HR specialists, and graphic designers, there’s a wide range of roles available. We ringfence positions at every level, from entry-level to senior management, with contracts that range from fixed-term to permanent positions.
Will Adjustments Be Provided?
Absolutely! The BBC is committed to creating an inclusive workplace and removing barriers for disabled employees. Our dedicated BBC Access and Disability Service provides assessments and ongoing support to ensure workplace adjustments are in place.
Adjustments are also available during the application and interview process. If you need to submit your application in an alternative format or require adjustments for an interview, just let us know. You can contact us at the email address provided in the job advert for support.
